RCA Supports Public Safety; Calls for Interoperability
Washington, DC – Eric Graham, Vice President for Strategic and Government Relations, Cellular South, Inc., testified today before the House Subcommittee on Emergency Communications, Preparedness and Response regarding interoperable emergency communications for first responders. RCA (Rural Cellular Association) thanks member company Cellular South, Inc. and Eric Graham for serving as a witness before the Subcommittee and speaking on behalf of all RCA members.
RCA members are strong supporters of public safety and support the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) initiative to develop a nationwide, mobile broadband public safety network. In his remarks Graham stated that, in addition to accessible spectrum and sufficient funding, “the most critical element for a successful wireless network is interoperability.” Graham also advocated an auction of the D block, calling it, “the surest way to provide public safety users with the lowest cost, widest coverage, highest-quality network possible.”
In a statement, RCA President & CEO Steven K. Berry said, “Interoperability is the key to successful deployment of a mobile broadband network, not only for public safety, but for all consumers. Congress and the FCC must mandate interoperability across all paired bands of 700 MHz spectrum to ensure that first responders are capable of seamless communication on a nationwide network in the event of an emergency. Interoperability is especially important for rural and hard-to-reach areas, as public safety officials and consumers in these areas have historically been at an equipment disadvantage compared to their urban counterparts.”
Berry continued, “With mandated interoperability, successful deployment and operation of a wireless network for public safety and consumers can be achieved. I look forward to our continued work with the Subcommittee and the FCC to accomplish this important initiative.”
